Det ble gjort mye forskning på medisinfri behandling, som viser bl. a. at pasienter ønsker denne behandlingen. Standal et al. 2025 konkluderer medisinfri behandling fører ikke til dårligere resultater.
Psykiaterne har en kunnskapsresistent vrangforestilling at antipsykotika fører med «stor sannsynlighet (...) til helbredelse eller vesentlig bedring» som brukes å tvangsmedisinere.
Psykiatere førte et korstog med polemisk kritikk bl. a. påstander at effektiviteten av antipsykotiske midler er hos "det store flertallet bidrar medisiner til symptomlette, funksjonsbedring og høyere selvrapportert livskvalitet." og «Medisinfrie sykehusposter – (er) et kunnskapsløst tiltak» mot medisinfri behandling og lyktes 7 år senere med at medisinfri enheter ble rasert. Basal eksponeringsterapi (BET) som helbreder «behandlingsresistente» medisinfri ble lagt ned.
Nyere forskning viser at antipsykotikas effekter er helt overdrevet og at kognitiv atferdsterapi er overlegen standardbehandling (TAU).
